It’s New Years Eve 2011, the alcohol is flowing and depleting rapidly, not even a sieve could disperse it any quicker, the mood is suitably mellow and there’s much merriment to be had. I, suitably relaxed after one or two beverages, begin to reflect on the events that have quickly transpired over the previous 12 months, before pondering the future, and all the elaborate turns that the New Year will undoubtedly surprise us with, until an inquisitive friend (I say friend, though I had never met her), began engaging me in a generically mundane conversation, that is until we reached one particularly familiar passion, gaming.
It wasnt long however until we both ascertained the interminable gulf that lay before us, the PS3 vs XBox 360 altercation had begun, and we relished it. Both us shamelessly praising our respective consoles, boasting frivolously about the wide and varied list of entertaining titles that each of us are fortunate enough to regale in, and simultaneously dispensing the same sense of dismay, at the oppositions catalogue of exclusives which we will probably never experience, you literally become incapable of seizing your involuntary lectures! Your striving to highlight your opposites glaring foibles in supporting a rival console, whilst still attempting to substantiate your feeble claims of victory by claiming your’s is “better looking”, which is akin to suggesting that Piers Morgan is more physically appealing than Jabba the Hutt, which is a relatively marginal contest.
As the figurative battle starts to build momentum, you both abruptly begin to fathom why these competitive, verbal disagreements have become so enthralling, because this is what gaming is about, diversity, differing opinions which creates imaginative discussions that keeps the industry expanding and inventive. Besides, the spirited debate that ensued is always of intriguing significance for your contemporaries, and allow’s everyone to contribute their own unique views on this ever heated quandary of which console is best, and additionally hastens the pity that non believers exude while keenly listening to your comical ramblings and PS3/XBox 360 influenced tirades (not that we pay any attention to these ignorant fools). It’s these moments of intellectual clarity that I cherish.
Have you had similar disagreements with friends who have been enticed by the dark side? Let me know, cheers.
