Anyone who’s played the previous incarnation’s of the never-ending line of Spiderman games that are seemingly regurgitated almost yearly, will share in my utter disappointment of the treatment of our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman. From the abysmal narrative, and awkward gameplay, there really hasn’t been game developed that warrants the wall crawlers name, it’s really been rather tarnished by unimaginative developer’s. Last year we saw the arrival of yet another Spiderman game, Shattered Dimensions, and although there were still many flaws with this incarnation, the inclusion of Spiderman 2099 wasnt one. It brought a different perspective to the Spiderman universe, and a beautifully rendered futuristic world for fans to become acquainted with, and it appears Activision agree.
Spiderman: Edge Of Time, will once again see Spidey swing across the present and future representation’s of New york City. The story follows a yet unnamed villain travelling through time from the year 2099, attempting to kill the modern-day Peter Parker, and will see both present/future Spidermen teaming up to prevent this horrible catastrophe. The story itself is being written by Spiderman 2099 creator Peter David, which should give both Spiderman interpretation’s considerably more substance, and hopefully, an appealing plot. But with the game being tipped for release before the end of the year, is 12 months really enough time to create a meaningful Spiderman game, particularly when you consider the effort and hours that are being cultivated into Batman Arkham City. We will have to wait and see.
Do you think Activision can finally create a game worthy of Spiderman? Or will this throw Activision into deeper financial turmoil?
