“Video games” and “Feature film” are generally words that don’t gel particularly well with most gamers, including myself, mainly due to the overwhelming fact that most are poorly written, ill-conceived, and generally nauseating viewing, (I’m still trying to find a way to erase the memory of watching the “Super Mario Brothers Movie”). But when I read that Uncharted is to be turned into a feature film, I found that I was actually excited, seriously excited. Uncharted is already an exhilarating action adventure, with the right people behind the project, it could easily make the transition from game to film, and become a movie masterpiece, but there is one flaw that worry’s me more than any other, Mark Wahlberg portraying the protagonist, Nathan Drake.
If you have already played Uncharted, then you will already be well acquainted with treasure hunter extraordinaire Nathan Drake and the kind of character that he is. He’s the every man, the guy you wish you could be, and can climb walls more assuredly than Spiderman. Nathan Drake is witty, funny, charismatic and absurdly good-looking (damn him). Mark Wahlberg on the other hand, although not a particular bad actor, really doesn’t embody any of the attributes that make Nathan Drake the charismatic individual that he is. There have been calls from many fans (myself included), that Nathan Fillian (Serenity/ Castle) would be the perfect candidate to portray Nathan Drake, but with Fillion not being a huge Hollywood star, it should come as no real surprise that movie executives have opted for Wahlberg, who is a proven box office A-lister, it is after all a moneymaking industry, but surely there is someone more suitable, he just appears to be too serious.
But perhaps im being unfairly critical of a motion picture that hasn’t even been developed yet, and it is probably to soon to cast judgment on a project that might just work, it is after all being written and directed by the man behind the oscar nominated movie “The Fighter”. All hope is not lost, and we have to try to remain optimistic that we will see the story with as much clarity as Russel clearly does, Mark Wahlberg could even be an inspired appointment, if he can get the character of Nathan Drake right. There is no doubt that Uncharted will be a commercial success, but could it still leave the majority of fans alienated or disappointed? only time will tell.
Do you think Mark Wahlberg is the Right/wrong choice to portray Nate? And what of David O Russell? Is he right to change the formula of Drakes Fortune to suite the big screen?
